The Skin'ny Benefits of Smart Skin Care and Smart Sun Exposure |

| New Year's is the holiday that celebrates the passage of time. As we begin 2008 many of you will turn to thoughts of self-improvement and the annual ritual of making resolutions and remaking ourselves. The most popular New Year resolutions involve maintaining peak vitality, physical fitness, or appearance. If your New Year’s Resolution is to look good and feel great in 2008 there are several options to consider. Improving your overall health is an easy choice to make. Make yourself an easy resolution to stick to by improving your Vitamin D health in the new year. It can be difficult to obtain enough vitamin D from natural food sources. For many people, consuming vitamin D fortified foods and adequate sunlight exposure are essential for maintaining a healthy vitamin D status. Sun exposure and diet are unlikely to result in vitamin D toxicity. Vitamin D toxicity is much more likely to occur from high intakes of vitamin D in supplements. Here are some suggestions to get your daily dose of Vitamin D without overdoing with supplements. Incorporating food items that are high in Vitamin D will set you in the right direction for success. Food options high in Vitamin D include, Salmon, tuna, or mackerel, egg yolks, beef liver, Vitamin D Fortified Milk and Vitamin D fortified breakfast cereals. Although the food sources are somewhat limited, the health benefits of adequate Vitamin D are endless. Sun exposure is perhaps the most effective source of vitamin D. A minimum of ten to fifteen minutes of sun exposure (natural or indoors) at least two times per week to the face, arms, hands, or back without sunscreen is usually sufficient to provide adequate vitamin D. Sunlight exposure from November through March in Wisconsin is insufficient to produce significant vitamin D synthesis in the skin. Visit your local Professional Indoor Tanning Salon and ask about the benefits of indoor tanning and smart sun exposure. Winter in Wisconsin can be long and cold, try some light therapy this winter and improve your Vitamin D levels at the same time. Make smart choices, spread the word, and have a sunny day! | It is wedding season! For this months article I’d like to focus on the countdown to your special day and offer some tips and advice to help you make your big day the best it can be. Shades Body Studio - Bridal Beauty: Countdown to the Big Day 3-4 MONTHS BEFORE • Want a glowing tan for your big day? Now's the time to begin a smart tanning regimen. Consider the neckline of your gown, and whether you have existing tan lines you'll need to cover. Stop in and discuss your needs with the staff at Shades Body Studio. Remind your “maids” they need color too. 1-2 MONTHS BEFORE • Ever consider having your eyebrows professionally shaped or having your legs or bikini area free of unwanted hair? Why not? It's your wedding. Now's the time to try it. Call Shades and make an appointment. Shades uses the only no wax, soy based, antimicrobial liquid hair removal system on the market. Our product leaves skin silky and smooth. Our system never sticks to your skin so there is no stretching or tearing of skin that a wax system can cause. • Get a salon facial. (Don't risk an allergic reaction closer to your wedding day.) Shades offers several facial options. We use BioElements® products in our facials and body treatments. • Exfoliate and moisturize with a Shades Body Polish. Soft and silky elbows, hands, and feet are marriage musts. • Want a sparkling big-day smile? Cut down on tea and coffee. You may also want to consider adding a teeth whitening kit to your tanning regimen. Ask your service specialist at Shades about Teeth Whitening available at Shades Body Studio. 2 WEEKS BEFORE • Remember to eat right. (Load up on fruits and veggies for energy, and avoid the salt and fat.) • Drink lots of water to help keep your skin clear. • Avoid overindulging in salty snacks and alcohol at those fab pre-wedding parties. Schedule a Body Detox at Shades to rid your body of toxins that build up from decadent party foods and beverages. • Confirm big-day beauty appointments. 1 WEEK BEFORE • Get a bikini wax, a final eyebrow shaping, and don’t forget those legs. You want to be prepared for that honeymoon lingerie. • Splurge on a massage. (If your budget's already stretched to the limit, ask your fiancé to do the deed, and give him one too.) You both deserve it! A 20 minute Aqua Massage at Shades is only $20.00 and worth every penny. • Get a final facial. Don't wait until the day before to do this. (Your face may need a day or two to adjust.) 1- 2 DAYS BEFORE • Drink lots of water. Have we made ourselves perfectly clear? • Pack an emergency beauty kit of items you shouldn't leave home without. • Deep-condition your hair. • Exfoliate your skin with a Shades Body Polish so your skin gleams on your wedding day. • Have a professional pedicure and manicure (especially since everyone's going to be looking at that ring on your finger). • Take a long, relaxing bath. ON YOUR WEDDING DAY • Be sure to eat something. This is not a day to operate on an empty stomach. • Get your hair and makeup done. Wear a button-down shirt (one that matches the color of your gown, if possible, to get the right makeup color application) that can be easily removed. • Take a few moments to reflect on the meaning of the day before giving yourself one last once-over in the mirror. Now get going! Emergency Beauty Kit While we hope there are no emergencies on the big day, it's always better to be safe than sorry. We've come up with a list of all those just-in-case items that will ensure your dream wedding goes off without a hitch. Have your maid or matron of honor pack these emergency items in a tote bag and stash the bag in a safe but easy-to-access place during the dinner and/or reception.
